The Hidden Nature of Thought

UNDERSTAND

Human thought is continuous.

Even when you are not actively trying to think, your mind is still processing, interpreting, and generating internal dialogue. This process operates automatically and often outside of conscious awareness.

Most people assume they are only thinking when they are intentionally analyzing something. In reality, thought is always active in the background.

This includes:

  • Replaying past experiences

  • Anticipating future scenarios

  • Interpreting current situations

  • Forming opinions and judgments

  • Reacting to sensory input (what you see, hear, or remember)

Because this activity is constant, it becomes normalized. Over time, it no longer feels like “thinking.” Instead, it is experienced indirectly through emotional states.

This creates a key misunderstanding:

Emotions appear to arise on their own, when in fact they are responses to ongoing thought patterns.

Additionally, most thoughts are not consciously chosen. They are influenced by:

  • Past experiences

  • Learned beliefs

  • Environmental exposure

  • Repetition over time

This means a large portion of mental activity is automatic, not intentional.

Understanding this distinction is foundational:

You are not only thinking when you are aware of it.
You are thinking continuously, whether you notice it or not.

TRY

The goal is not to control thinking, but to begin noticing it.

Start with simple observation.

At any point during the day—especially when you notice a shift in your emotional state—pause briefly and ask:

“What might I be thinking right now?”

Do not force an answer. The purpose is not accuracy, but awareness.

You may notice:

  • Fragments of internal dialogue

  • Repetitive concerns

  • Subtle assumptions or expectations

  • Vague mental tension without clear wording

If nothing specific comes to mind, that is still useful.

In that case, acknowledge:

“There is likely something running in the background, even if I can’t fully hear it yet.”

This step builds familiarity with your internal process.

The objective is not to fix or change anything at this stage.
It is to recognize that thought is present—even when it is not obvious.

GROW

As awareness increases, a shift begins to occur.

Emotions no longer feel random or disconnected. Instead, they begin to appear as indicators—pointing toward underlying thought activity.

This creates separation between:

  • The experience (emotion)

  • The cause (thought patterns)

With this separation, reactivity decreases.

Rather than being fully absorbed in a feeling, you begin to observe:

“This feeling may be connected to something I’m thinking or entertaining.”

This awareness introduces a new level of agency.

Not because you are controlling every thought—but because you are no longer completely unaware of them.

Over time, this leads to:

  • Greater clarity of internal patterns

  • Reduced confusion around emotional states

  • The ability to pause before escalation

This is the starting point for all further work.

Without awareness of thought, there is no reliable way to understand or influence emotional experience.

Once thought is recognized as continuous and often unnoticed, the next step is understanding how the body responds to it.

Emotions are not random disruptions—they function as real-time feedback.

Emotions as Real-Time Feedback — Your Built-In Guidance System

Hi everyone,

I'm George Balboa…

I created Positive Self Talk as a practical way to understand and work with the mind—especially during stress, anxiety, and overthinking.

My focus is on helping people recognize how their internal dialogue shapes their emotional experience, and how small shifts in awareness can create real change.

This approach is not about perfection or forced positivity, but about developing a clearer relationship with thoughts, emotions, and patterns that often go unnoticed.

Through simple, repeatable methods, I aim to help people feel more grounded, more in control, and better equipped to navigate their everyday lives with clarity and confidence.
